That was a fine(seriously) piece today in the WSJ, but was I the
only one who was livid when scenes of Iranian embassy personel
departing the U.S. were broadcast? When diplomatic relations are
established aren't ambassadors said to be "exchanged"?(For all I
know, the U.S. may have some embassies in some flyspeck countries
which have none here.)I agree that we should have gone to war
against Iran,(viewing our U.S. embassy folks as already dead),
but obtaining the release of its own diplomats as part of a peace
treaty could have allowed the Iranians to save some "face" while
they released(if still alive)U.S. diplomats.
I haven't the foggiest how such things worked in Greek 'n Roman
civs, but perhaps you could enlighten us. And btw., if we made
war on Islam the way that those ancient civilizations did, would
that make us "barbarians"?(not that I care)
Treading further into areas where I'm even thinner on knowledge,
it seems at least plausible that it is important to punish acts
of violence against..what's the right word here?..envoys.
(Whining about the "barbarism" of those acts, tying ribbons
around trees or automobile antennae doesn't count for much.) The
Muslim Khwaresm came to regret the butchering of Genghis Khan's
envoy, and the historical Dracula, who according to some accounts
nailed the hats of Florentine and Turkish envoys to their heads,
may have lost his own to Muhammed II.
