Rerunning a blog(which is itself sort of a rerun)from Oct 31, 2004. I am no longer Christian, but the phrase "mindless Christianity" was not intended to smear Christianity, and I admit that a kind of decency underlies much of our conduct in Iraq. It *is*, however, a pre-9/11, pre-12/06/41 decency which we can no longer afford. Steven Vincent's piece on NRO today adds to the argument that it's time for teaching the lessons painfully learned by the citizens of Berlin, Dresden, et al and the ethnic Germans who formerly lived in what used to be "Prussia," the Sudetenland, and elsewhere.
We can learn from the old Mongols who would sometimes deliberately not surround an enemy, but leave what appeared to be an avenue of escape for their enemies. Reasonable people could(and should)debate whether we should allow Sunnis to flee to temporary havens in Syria, Iran, and eleswhere -or turn those avenues into highways o' death. Neither choice is entirely palatable, but it's them or us in the dustbin of history.

Tonight's 60 Minutes ran breathtakingly inane drivel alledging that our troops are being killed and maimed because of insufficient body and vehicle armor. Right. Let's ensure that none of our troops spend a moment outside of an underground bunker or an M1 Abrams Tank.(Lemme see now....20,000 tanks at $4,300,000 a pop...and factor in 3 gallons of fuel per mile....)Even that might not be effective for long if the "insurgents" simply used bigger and better placed bombs.
Within hours of learning that we have finally recognized the Iraqi people(apart from trivial numbers of Christians)as our enemies, their roads will be clogged, not with our own "targets on the ground" getting blown up while they travel to point A to B and back again, but with tens of millions of refugees streaming for "havens" in Syria, Jordan, and Iran. We would be condemned by the "world," but the "world" has long hated us and does not recognize our right to exist. -And couldn't effectively oppose us. (Would China accept its incineration to protect Islam?)And would it make us "as bad as the terrorists"? No, it would make them dead, and give us a chance for survival. If we are not prepared to take necessary measures(as we were with the civilian population of the USSR)we do not deserve to survive. The West is crippled by not only the mindless fifth column treason of the Left, but by the mindless Christianity of people such as Bush and the idiocy of myopic, group-thinking bureaucratic elites that are even less likely than GWB to admit to mistakes. And all of them, of course, either support or will not oppose the genocidal war waged by Mexican and other third world immigrants.
